T his is the best of the single-disc compilations of Talking Heads, essentially Sand in the Vaselineís better half. The early material sounds noticeably cleaner than I remember--noticeably cleaner than most music from 1977 or the Heads albums that followed for that matter--and like Michael Jackson you wonder if they havenít tampered with those tapes to the point of nose return. The trouble with shining up the early stuff is it gives a false impression of the Headsí first album; the ideas and energy were certainly there, but the studio sophistication came later. To hear it now, the pristine sound and execution suggest a band of engineers not artists. Anyway, enough grousing about historical revision, since objective truth only exists as an object of pursuit in philosophy. On the off chance that you came hear to hear about The Best of Talking Heads, hear this: itís completely superfluous for fans or anyone who purchased Sand, and only recommended to those people who want to buy a single disc of the Headsí best music across their career. The latter may number more than a few, since itís a good introduction to the band, makes a nice gift, costs less than buying the songs individually in case youíre so inclined, etc. To their credit, should history remember, the Heads didnít cash in on a greatest hits compilation until the end of their career. Since then, no less than seven compilations have been released here and abroad, including (I kid you not) one from Starbucks on their Opus Collection imprimatur. Apparently, the coffee maker has found a way to turn a profit that requires even less effort than boiling water.
