T he concert film Stop Making Sense took its name from a line in “Girlfriend Is Better,” so when it came time to release a single, what song could be better? Actually, most of the tracks on Stop Making Sense. The single is an edited version of the concert piece, excising much of the keyboard solo at the end of the original. It didn’t chart, but it was never a great song to begin with. A live version of “Heaven” from the same venue that didn’t make the original album cut was included as the B side. It didn’t appear on the expanded reissue of Stop Making Sense either (go figure...), so the single is something of a collectible. Unfortunately, I got the 7-inch promo, which substitutes the studio version of “Girlfriend Is Better” on the flip side. And it does appear that they were rebranding the song as “Stop Making Sense (Girlfriend Is Better),” so I’ve honored that here.
