Tangerine Dream
Arguably the most important electronic act to emerge from the post-psychedelic scene, Tangerine Dream are pioneers who used analog and, later, digital synthesizers to create rich musical soundscapes. With Edgar Froese and Chris Franke at its core, TD has been fortunate to count among its ranks a host of electronic luminaries: Conrad Schnitzler, Klaus Schulze, Peter Baumann, Johannes Schmoelling, and Paul Haslinger among them. In the '70s, Tangerine Dream was faithful to the progressive rock movement in spirit if not always in sound, picking up where Pink Floyd's instrumental pieces ended. Franke left the band in the '80s to score film music (including the Babylon 5 series), by which time TD had shifted more toward the electronica/new age side of things. By the '90s, the band consisted mainly of Edgar Froese and his son, Jerome, who brought two generations of electronic music together: the moody, heroic tone poems of old filtered through techno/club beats. The pair continue apace into the 21st century, reswizzling earlier work and writing new compositions for their Tangerine Dream International label. There's a fair amount of filler in their catalog -- mundane soundtracks, remixes, repackages -- so neophytes would do well to start with the band's "classic" period (roughly from 1970-1980).
