B efore delivering his diagnosis on England’s political ills (Infected), Matt Johnson administered a couple of booster shots to brace them: “Sweet Bird of Truth” and, some weeks later, “Heartland.” The latter became his first UK Top 40 single, this despite the fact that it’s a dour bit of business that comes to the harsh conclusion that England is the 51st state of the USA. (Oh yeah, how do you like me now, Puerto Rico?) The 7-inch B side was a nonalbum track, “Born in the New S.A.,” while the 12-inch includes another ("Flesh and Bones"). Interestingly, “Heartland” appeared in the US as a free promotional record from the now-defunct (in all but name) Tower Records with the future single “Slow Train to Dawn” on the flip. To their credit, the English take their medicine, but Epic couldn’t give this stuff away in the USA. Sweet truth or not, without the sugar coating, we don’t swallow (which could make a really good flag with a snake on it or something).
