T he gentlemanly pursuit of pop music, in which benign entities like Banks, Andy Summers and Phil Manzanera live out their days in sartorial zen and commercial indifference. It’s akin to the gentleman farmer, in which the principles of good gardening are applied while the end result doesn’t need to feed an entire army of accountants, road crews and promotional people. Tony Banks has never cultivated a solo career as vigorously as the other members of Genesis (well, maybe Mike Rutherford, since M+M wasn’t technically a solo gig). He seems content to release the occasional new album, assured of a major label and relatively good promotion. Bankstatement, released in between Genesis albums, appeared to be an attempt to retool himself along the lines of Mike + The Mechanics. Still, recorded shortly thereafter, sounded similar but followed a different approach: invite four talented singers to supper and let everyone take turns telling a story. Some of the stories are excellent: “Water Out of Wine,” “Another Murder of a Day” and “Still It Takes Me By Surprise” are eloquent as only Banks can be. Others, like “The Gift” and “Hero For An Hour,” are guilty pleasures in line with The Fugitive. The rest of the record is slightly beneath a gentleman’s stature: “Angel Face” would seem to trespass on Genesis too heavily, Nik Kershaw’s contributions may not resonate with Banks’ audience. As for the positive praise that some souls have laid at the foot of Still, they mean well but, in looking for their lost lamb, they’re apt to mistake fluffy and frothy creations for the real thing. I’d rank this a notch below Bankstatement, two notches below The Fugitive, but far better than the meandering Feeling and soporific soundtracks.
