K ronomyth 2.99: IT LEFT ME A LITTLE COLD. The advance single from Boys From Pele is one of the album’s better tracks, with a tight melody hammered out on a harpsichord and Tori twisting her words as though pulled from an odd alter ego in a little girl’s subconscious... and yet and yet and yet it’s all so much achoo about nothing. At the risk of offending the famed Ms. Amos’ rather rabid fan base, I find her annoying sometimes. Her lyrics don’t make sense to me. They make sense to her, presumably, but it’s not enough to write personal songs. Joni Mitchell wrote personal songs that had universal meaning. I can see how folks could be snookered into Amos' game, since it reeks of art, but artful precocity is more like it. Identical to the album version, Sneeze was accompanied by the usual nonalbum tracks. I own the CD single with three tracks billed as Silly Songs which includes “This Old Man” (yes, the knick knack paddywhack song, which is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard her sing), a one-minute “Hungarian Wedding Song” (the second-stupidest thing I’ve ever heard her sing) and “Toodles Mr. Jim,” which is actually pretty smart although, as the ending reveals, so personal that listeners would be completely lost without an explanation. As I said, Choirgirl Hotel bought her some much-needed credibility in my book, but here she’s still something to sneeze at.
