S omehow, Casablanca got the US distribution rights to Bolan’s recent material (if it was a card game, they should have taken the watch instead) and beat most of what would become Bolan’s Zip Gun to market with Light of Love. Like the “official” T. Rex albums from this period (Zinc Alloy, Zip Gun), listeners approaching this from vintage Rex might go into synthetic shock on first listen. Songs like “Girl In The Thunderbolt Suit” and “Think Zinc” stretch Bolan’s already-thin lyrical credibility, and the backing vocals of Gloria Jones et al lack the unearthly grace of Flo & Eddie. But when you canvas the musical landscape and find so few glam artists making music like this, it dawns on you that even Bolan at fifty-percent power is a cup half full. There are moments that muster the old magic (“Venus Loon,” “Precious Star”), examples of Bolan seeking rockier terrain (“Explosive Mouth” and the otherwise overlooked B side, “Space Boss”), and short bursts of high-octane silliness. As the saying goes, though, you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear. Light of Love is a better record than Bolan’s Zip Gun song-for-song, but that’s hardly aiming very high.
