K ronomyth 7.1: BEAUTY IN THE I OF THE B HOLDER. David Foster is the Barry Manilow of the 80s, a backhanded compliment for sure. And yet he’s the man who almost singlehandedly saved The Tubes, or at least preserved them through the 80s with his production, connections and commercial tunesmithing. It was Foster who cowrote the big hits on Backward (“Talk To Ya Later,” “Don’t Want to Wait Anymore”). On the followup, Foster, Fee Waybill and Steve Lukather combined forces again for another winner, “She’s A Beauty.” The song became the biggest hit of their career, aided in part by a high-quality music video directed by Kenny Ortega, who choreographed The Tubes’ elaborate stage shows. While the members of The Tubes appeared in the video, I’m not sure they all appeared on the original studio track; certainly some extra vocalists were brought in and that’s probably Lukather on the guitar solo. Like Cheap Trick, there’s the sense that The Tubes are being artificially sustained at this point. And, like Cheap Trick, there’s ample evidence that they didn’t need the help. For exhibit A consider the Bs of Outside Inside: all nonalbum tracks that (with the exception of the insipid “Sports Fans”) show a band with plenty of ideas left in them. “When You’re Ready To Come” is as solid as anything that made the cut on Outside, sort of a cross between “No Not Again” and Men at Work’s “Who Can It Be Now?” (maybe later…). Probably from a dearth of good material (Love Bomb, I’m looking at you), Capitol/EMI has readily come-piled this and the other Bs on several compilations.
