H istory will remember The Tubes as a humorous theatre rock troupe who finally intersected with Utopia and then disappeared. If they take this disc at face value anyway. A&M and Capitol can’t seem to join together when it comes to The Tubes, so the band’s compilations either feature the first half of their career (the conceptual years) or the last (the dancing days). Perhaps if this had been called 20th Century Masters: The Best of The Tubes - The Millenium Collection (The A&M Years), and someone read the title without falling asleep, that person would have a better idea of what they were getting into (and realize they weren't getting it all). On the plus side, the packaging is better than I expected (I didn’t expect much) and the sound quality is fine. As for the selection, Now gets slighted (only “Pound of Flesh” is featured), their live double-album is ignored (“Show Me A Reason” or “I Was A Punk Before You Were A Punk” would have been nice additions) and the odds & ends T.R.A.S.H. is taken out of the picture. So this millenium leans heavy on Remote Control, closing things with Young & Rich’s “Tubes World Tour” (probably a bit of promotion there). My knock on the Millenium Collection releases is that they’re repackaged product, something A&M was doing a lot of lately. Since T.R.A.S.H. wasn’t a proper collection of hits, you’ll find more of The Tubes’ early magic on The Millenium Collection, but with a few extra tracks A&M could have made this a real winner and not simply the winner by default. Instead, this is one track (and a couple of sleeve folds) shy of impish frugality.
