CLACD 110 cover

L etting Mick out of the box created a monster of an album. Ken Hensley had been Heep’s driving force to date, steering the band to a cleaner, more concise sound on Conquest, but Mick Box and the revamped Heep took it to another level on Abominog. The trademark vocal harmonies are still there, but the blistering lead guitar work of Box and the vocals of Peter Goalby (easily their best singer since Byron) feel like the best parts of Foreigner fused with the burgeoning heavy metal scene. “Too Scared To Run,” “That’s The Way It Is,” “Hot Persuasion” - these are the band’s best tracks in a long time. Heep hadn’t seen the north side of a Top 40 chart since the mid ‘70s, but Abominog put the band back on the map with a vengeance. Mick Box was never a prolific songwriter like Hensley, yet the pastiche of band-written tracks, outside material and one leftover (“Think It Over”) works surprisingly well. It’s a different chapter than Heep’s earlier work; still, the presence of an unleashed Box and a post-Ozzy Lee Kerslake (who brought bassist Bob Daisley with him) will please purists, while Goalby and John Sinclair are suitable fill-ins for Byron and Hensley. Experience tells us that ‘80s metal doesn’t age well, and Abominog again defies expectations by sounding remarkably fresh even twenty years later. This lineup didn’t record another album as good as Abominog again, but it served its purpose, giving the brand a much-needed boost into the new decade. (FYI, I have no idea what the title refers to, although that is one abominable noggin on the cover.)
