O h, how the mighty had fallen. At this stage, Heep had pretty much devolved into a run-of-the-mill hard rock band, sounding at times like an underinspired Bad Company or Scorpions, but rarely like their old selves. When they do kick up some dust, as on the Lawton-penned “I’m Alive,” you wonder what the fuss is all about. Everything starts off fine, with a distinctive guitar line from Mick Box, and ends with the wistful and well-conceived “Fallen Angel,” but in between it really suffers from a lack of personality. Hensley’s “Love or Nothing” harks back to “Lady in Black,” but little else stands out for the right reasons (the singularly awful “Falling in Love” does for the wrong ones). Blaming Lawton isn’t the answer, since bands have done more with less. It’s a lack of electricity between the players, subpar material from all involved, harmonies that fall flat for the first time, and the audible absence of Hensley’s keyboards that are most disappointing. While it does make the subsequent loss of Lawton and Kerslake less crushing, Fallen Angel’s failings fuel the suspicion that the band had outlived its usefulness. If the album cover suggested vintage Heep, the music itself seemed a long way from it. “Come Back To Me” did become one of Heep’s most popular ballads, but you’d be better off picking up a compilation with that on it.
