A medium tempo number that shuffles along nicely: horns, female backing vocals, the usual soulful mumbling from Morrison. The song could be about critics, rich musicians, record executives, I never know with him. I’d tell you that most Van Morrison songs sound alike to me, and “Ivory Tower” simply doesn’t stand out among them. The image of the ivory tower could also have something to do with W.B. Yeats and the tower he restored for his wife. Van Morrison seems to choose his imagery for the maximum number of interpretations. Wise man, he, confounding critics thusly. If you're curious, you can see a picture of the tower.
