T hree chords hurled at the wall of indifference by a band of beautiful losers. Which might also describe Teenage Fanclub and The Pixies. Shortly after “Buddy Holly” hit MTV, Weezer were the next great white hope, a crown they quickly handed back with Pinkerton. But that doesn’t diminish anything they accomplished with their first album. Before the first hit even rolls around (“Buddy Holly”), listeners will be waving the weezer flag. Rivers Cuomo is like a more prolific Norman Blake, tossing off one great idea after another. He also does a better job of developing his ideas, lingering over the melodies so that it isn’t so much cotton candy. Like Blake, he plays the dorky underdog to perfection: “Buddy Holly” (is there a limit to how many times I can reference that song?), “No One Else,” “In The Garage.” But there’s also a nonconformist mentality at work that makes the music inexplicably cool (just check out “Surf Wax America”). Make no mistake; Weezer rocks. Listening to this disc, I get the feeling that Weezer found the formula that Teenage Fanclub and Nirvana were originally after. The Pixies honestly transcended this when they weren’t knee deep in noodles. Of course, The Pixies never name-checked Dungeons & Dragons either, and that’s gotta earn you an extra cool point or two. I play this disc all the time, and I know it doesn’t have a blessed thing to do with prog, but it does play into the Beatles fantasy we all had about making perfect music that left the establishment wondering if they’d just been entertained or interred.
