O f a sudden a loud CLANK and Captain Mebyl came tumbling off the gravity bed. Galaxies weren’t supposed to go clank in the middle of the night; not on the empty fringes. Donning his space suit, he slipped into the cold, stale emptiness and found the source of the commotion: a small black disc stuck around the nose of the ship. Dislodging it with his giant titanium space tweezers, Captain Mebyl brought it inside for further examination. The first thing he noticed was how hard it was. On one side it was brittle, sweet, with words or symbols scrawled all over it. When he turned it over, it was stronger, bitter. What to make of it? Was it a message to a lost goddess or merely a chunk of planet hurled by careless men in suits? Mebyl didn’t ponder the question long before he was interrupted by a bigger one: a last, lost planet fast approaching in his window. Clearly the old moon and town’s end weren’t the end of everything. “Looks like I’ve been fooled again,” he said, and prepared himself for a hard, hard landing.
