M CA decided to shake things up in 1995, remixing and remastering The Who’s classic catalog while unearthing some unreleased tracks in the bargain. My Generation - The Very Best of The Who showcases these remixed and remastered versions in the setting of a greatest hits compilation. As such, My Generation supersedes earlier compilations like Meaty Beaty and Who’s Greatest Hits with its wider selection, better sound and thoughtful packaging. Now, I’m a little uneasy with the impurity of remixing old and familiar gems, but any sonic tampering that took place is transparent to my ears, so no harm done. The world doesn’t really need another Who compilation, but it does need at least one; if MCA chose to replace its aging pace cars with a sleek new model, so be it. I won’t bother picking apart the track selection; they make fine choices, duplicating earlier efforts for the most part (although “Love Reign O’er Me” is missing). The order is almost entirely chronological (“Join Together” skipped ahead), giving listeners an idea of the band’s evolution. While it’s hard to get excited about another Who compilation, My Generation is a fair indication of what to expect from the MCA remasters: loud, clean and well-chronicled. And don't be fooled by the lure of owning the single edit version of “Who Are You" -- the same version already appeared on Who’s Greatest Hits.
