A n inching toward an entire album, as The Woodentops condensed their singles into an EP (Straight Eight Bushwaker) and expanded the EP with this. Well Well Well... is a wonderful introduction into the weird world of The Woodentops, a good bet to please anyone who enjoyed Julian Cope, The The, Polyrock and the rest of the ‘80s envelope pushers who got washed up on the left bank of the mainstream like so much alluvial sediment. The trouble with a band like The Woodentops is they sound familiar and unique at the same time, so in searching for a reference point (the insistent melodies and vocal delivery of Matt Johnston, the ragged retro spirit of The Fleshtones, the strangeness of Julian Cope) critics can often point listeners in the wrong direction. What separates The Woodentops is a blending of normal melodies (“Well Well Well...,” “Do It Anyway”) with unconventional drum beats, hallucinogenic vocals (think early Ian McCulloch) and Byrds-like guitars. With one musical foot in Akron, Ohio and the other in Athens, Georgia, you could expect a band to stand like this. At a given moment, I’m likely to hear elements of Polyrock (“It Will Come”), The Smiths (“Special Friend”) and even Stray Cats (“Do It Ayway”) in this deep well of tunes, yet again approaching The Woodentops with those expectations won’t prepare you for the journey ahead. If the strange, hairy things that hide in the heads of artists attract you, you’ll find them in The Woodentops’ Well Well Well... And you wouldn’t want to miss that, would you?
