R ecorded in Knoxville and Nashville, this disc features a handful of popular artists doing their own versions of Christmas classics like “Jingle Bells” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” It’s an eclectic assortment of stars on the surface: Glen Campbell, Kim Carnes, B.J. Thomas, and husband-and-wife team Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. Some of this is your standard yuletide fare, such as the B.J. Thomas selections, but there are a few surprises. Marilyn McCoo’s soulful “O Come, All Ye Faithful” and the ambitious album-ending medley with Glen Campbell stand out. Otherwise, this is mostly par for the Christmas course; Carnes isn’t as scratchy as you’d think, Campbell is still surprisingly dulcet after all these years. You may be wondering why anyone would listen to Christmas music in June, but I think it’s good to hear these songs beyond the mad press of Xmas. Separated from the surfeit of seasonal sweetness, you’re reminded that these are songs of Christian worship (except for “Jingle Bells” obviously). As such, they represent some of the greatest songs in the Christian canon, and the fact that we only trot them out once a year, and then mostly as background music to orgiastic consumption, is our loss. Taking a different tangent, the stitching together of an album by different artists is an interesting approach that record companies should pursue more often. One of the great missteps of music was the idea that an artist should produce an entire album of new music. The result has left us with an historical mountain of mediocre castaways. Like multi-artist tours, multi-artist albums have their audience, especially in a consumer environment where listening to an entire album by a single artist requires a monumental effort of concentration.
