Purveyors of "smooth" jazz, noting that I like my jazz better when it's bumpy. I'm not really a big Yellowjackets fan, which is their poor fortune I suppose, since I've written several reviews of their work for AMG. My attraction to them is for their peripheral prog connections; Jimmy Haslip has played bass on several important sessions, producer David Hentschel has worked with Genesis and Andy Summers among others, and the participation of Alex Acuna underscores a fellowship with the melodic side of Weather Report. If the mere mention of GRP doesn't induce cringing, then Yellowjackets are nothing to be scared of. Politics and Greenhouse are a nudge above their other works in my mostly useless opinion, so you may want to start there.
