I ’ve read that John Lennon was holding a tape of “Walking On Thin Ice” when he was shot. Fatalism? Maybe. Opportunism? No. At six minutes, the single never stood a chance of charting, but it’s easily as good (and probably a little better) than Yoko’s contributions to Double Fantasy, which themselves represented something of a career highpoint for her. John wasn’t merely being supportive when he suggested that Yoko release this as a single, it’s actually a good song. Elements of Japanese music are swirled into modern Western settings (new wave/rock), delivered in Yoko’s clipped, breathy style, poetry complete with bird caws a la George Crumb. The flip side originally dates from 1973 and features street dialogue between John and Yoko that sets up this pretty, acoustic song. Anyone who enjoyed Yoko’s contributions to Double Fantasy (and I did) owes it to themselves to check out “Walking On Thin Ice.” Sadly, the single marks the end of Yoko’s innocence, as subsequent albums (notably Season of Glass) were recorded under the cloud of loss and pain.
