W hile it may not drive demand for her earlier work, clever remixes have gone a long way toward vindicating them. Then again, if you rolled a doodie in chopped nuts... I’m not familiar with the original versions (really, what good am I?), though it’s unlikely I’d recognize them in these remixes anyway. The two mixes of “Will I,” for example, are so radically different from one another that you wouldn’t know they stem from the same song to hear them side by side. The first is a smart club track, the second a shrouded journey into the subconscious. The highlight of the disc is a jazzy take on “O’Oh” from Nuspirit Helsinki, which features a completely new instrumental track behind Yoko’s vocals. These three tracks represent (to date) the coolest Ono-related music I own. The Rob Rives remix of “Fly” seems conventional by comparison (just my opinion) and the Porcupine Tree remix of “Death of Samantha” is far more organic than anything else on here, transplanting Yoko’s song into the land of Radiohead. I’ve always felt like I’ve stood on shaky ground when making a case for Yoko Ono as an artist. “Will I/Fly” is an entirely different matter, a solid structure built on the presumption that Yoko’s artistry was already established. Whether it’s a case of working around the original design or filling in the cracks is likely open to debate. Ono as a musical artist -- how to put this nicely? -- afforded herself some pretty wide margins. I don’t know if these remixes are clever commentary written in the wide margins or distracting doodles, but the end result is impressive, so it may not matter to you.
