Adrian Belew
Super session guitarist turned solo artist, Adrian Belew has enjoyed the occasional whiff of success ("Oh Daddy," "Pretty Pink Rose") on his own, but may be best remembered for his participation in the resurrected King Crimson of the '80s. Brief stints with David Bowie (Stage), Frank Zappa (Sheik Yerbouti) and Talking Heads brought Belew onto the radar screen, where his over-the-top guitar work sometimes eclipsed his employers. With the release of Lone Rhino in 1982, Belew looked poised for a breakthrough, but his next two albums (Twang Bar King, Desire Caught By The Tail) represent the musical equivalent of baseball's sophomore slump. Adrian continued to hone his passion for pop music on his own and with his old bar band, The Bears, releasing some very good albums (Mr. Music Head, Inner Revolution) along the way. Though there are clearly similarities between Crimson's song-like compositions ("Heartbeat," "Man With An Open Heart") and Belew's solo albums, the guitarist's later work is just as likely to strike a chord with fans of Jeff Lynne and George Harrison. Belew continues to balance his solo career with session work and an on again/off again involvement with Robert Fripp's various Crimson projects.
