Brand X
Brand X was born out of sessions from Jack Lancaster, Brian Eno and others. It was in these settings that the original quartet of Phil Collins, John Goodsall, Robin Lumley and Percy Jones first worked together. With Collins at the kit and soft fusion as their aim, Brand X had much in common with Bill Bruford's eponymous outfit. Together with Bruford and acts like Soft Machine, Brand X was part of a brief, burgeoning movement in the late '70s that saw progressive rock artists re-cast themselves in the more serious light of fusion jazz. Despite some initial success, Brand X's influence waned as the public's preliminary fascination with fusion faded. To his credit, Collins never outgrew the experiment, though it was Goodsall who served as the band's mainstay over the years. Brand X folded in the early '80s, reunited briefly in the '90s with Goodsall and Jones, and folded again. Jones has released several solo albums, and various members over the years continue to do session work. I can't recall what happened to Phil, but I'm sure he made out all right.
