Helmet
Metal band who got lumped into the Seattle explosion despite hailing from the other side, New York. Meantime and Betty are considered their best. If you found the whole West Coast thing kind of silly (Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers), Helmet is a seriously good alternative.
