Jethro Tull
What can I say about my favorite band but this: Listen. Okay, I can say more than that since the one sentence looks terrible all by itself. Jethro Tull is one of prog's top-tier talents alongside Yes, Genesis, Rush, et cetera. Even during the band's early folk/blues period, singer/flautist Ian Anderson's ambitions eyed the rich world of prog. With electric guitarist Martin Barre, Tull strode into the electric rock camp with Benefit and, better stiil, Aqualung. However, Aqualung revealed Anderson's penchant for convoluted concepts, and some felt the side-long song cycles of Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play were too extreme (others loved them). The band returned to shorter songs with War Child and closed their "classic" phase somewhere around Heavy Horses. Anderson's voice having grown rougher in recent years, Tull now limits itself to occasional releases, often featuring members of Fairport Convention. 1987's Crest of a Knave finally earned the band a Grammy... for best heavy metal record.
