C oyote is the one that got away, a hit single that never happened. And yet none of her hits should have happened, really, except that the novelty of them (and frequent radio play) compelled the timid of spirit to spend two dollars on a “Big Yellow Taxi” or “Help Me.” I can’t explain how the other singles happened: In France, I’m a Radio. Her music was an acquired taste, and once you acquired it a mere single serving wouldn’t do. So the people who might buy a Coyote were the same people who already bought Hejira. As good as it is, Coyote couldn’t hook you where the earlier singles didn’t, so you were either on board or you’d missed the train. However (and here’s where Coyote succeeded) the song was a good advertisement for Hejira, popped up on radio stations and let folks know that Joni had a new album out. So the success of Coyote should be measured by Hejira’s sales and not its own commercial shortcomings.
