New Riders of the Purple Sage
New Riders rose from the roots of the Grateful Dead. John Dawson, David Nelson and Dave Torbert had appeared as supporting musicians on Aoxomoxoa, Workingman's Dead and American Beauty. When the trio decided to form their own band, Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart returned the favor by appearing on their eponymous debut. Their early albums--featuring original material from John Dawson and Dave Torbert--were moderately successful, falling slightly out of favor as the '70s progressed (regressed?). These days, it's their association with the Dead that has kept interest in the band alive, with archival recordings still cropping up from smoky quarters.
