A year after “Band On The Run” topped the US charts, “Listen To What The Man Said” repeated the feat. The song seems to make a few stylistic concessions to disco music, like the pronounced bass and glossy-sounding keyboards. Paul would return to this terrain for his next big hit, “Silly Love Songs” (in fact the two are really halves of the same sentiment). The flip side is “Love In Song,” a pretty but sad melody polished up beautifully. For reasons I’m unaware of, “Listen To What The Man Said” was buried at the back end of Venus + Mars, and Capitol took care not to make the same mistake on Speed of Sound and London Town.
