Pete Townshend
To utter the name Pete Townshend is to invoke memories of The Who, one of the great rock & roll bands. Townshend was the lifeblood of that band, its driving creative force and the pillar on which that band's greatness rested. In the shadow of The Who's achievement lies the solo career of Townshend: the early and often tentative albums made while the band was in its heyday, the works recorded after Keith Moon's death that sought to appropriate The Who's sound for Pete's own profit, and infrequent concept albums that found the singer/guitarist grasping for the once-abundant straws of greatness. Nothing in Pete's solo catalog could hope to eclipse the accomplishments of The Who, and yet he has released a few albums that surpass anything in the band's catalog after Who Are You. Empty Glass, White City and, to a lesser extent, All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes, are a fair approximation of what fans could expect from a latter-day Who. He is far too talented a songwriter to suffer silence, though better to exhaust The Who's supply of classic albums before venturing into Pete's sometimes lonely wilderness.
