Progrography

Peter Baumann
During the '70s, Peter Baumann was one-third of the best electronic band on earth, Tangerine Dream. Baumann joined Tangerine Dream on synthesizers for their third album, Zeit, and remained with them until 1977's live Encore. In between, he helped Tangerine Dream shape their sound into electronic tone poems like Phaedra and, later, sequencer-driven works like Rubycon and Stratosfear. Baumann released his first solo album in 1976, Romance '76, without departing much from Tangerine Dream's established idiom. With the advent of Eurodisco, the photogenic Baumann tried to attract a crossover audience with dance-oriented electronic pop on Repeat Repeat and Strangers In The Night. Baumann later started his own label, Private Music, which released works by his former band as well as new age artists like John Tesh and Yanni. The disco/pop albums from the '80s are forgettable, but Romance '76 is very good -- on equal footing with "classic" period Tangerine Dream.
