T he title is no laughing matter, …But Seriously is serious stuff. The album deals with a trio of estrangements that Phil was feeling at the time: from society, from his father, from his wife. It’s all done with the immaculate studio production, upbeat horn arrangements and ingratiating melodies that fans (and his record company) had come to expect, but the slick surface is a smokescreen for the emotional turmoil underneath. The songs are often achingly poignant, from the bittersweet “Do You Remember?” to the cautiously optimistic “Find A Way To My Heart.” There has always been a melancholy side to Phil’s music, but the decision to stare it unblinking in the face after a pair of light, romantic singles (“A Groovy Kind of Love,” “Two Hearts”) gives …But Seriously added contrast. The record still contained a cache of hits, including “Another Day In Paradise,” “Something Happened On The Way To Heaven,” “I Wish It Would Rain Down” and “That’s Just The Way It Is.” Topping the charts in the US and UK, it’s unclear how many listeners really looked beneath the pleasant surface to share the pain underneath, but most likely the majority didn’t miss the melancholy message. …But Seriously remains a mature, vulnerable, yet remarkably well-crafted record. Here, Phil’s sober self-assessment resonates more deeply than the less personal No Jacket Required.
