Roxy Music
Roxy hit the scene with one of the most unique sounds of the Seventies, radically altering the musical landscape in the wake of seminal efforts like For Your Pleasure... and their first album. Led by charismatic frontman Bryan Ferry, Roxy originally featured Brian Eno alongside guitarist Phil Manzanera, Andrew Mackay and Paul Thompson (bass players came and went, including for a short time John Wetton). At first dark and spooky perverters of rock's conventions, the band fell increasingly under the influence of Ferry's romantic vision with the departure of Eno (who was succeeded by Eddie Jobson). Stranded and Country Life went after a cosmopolitan (but still dark) sound that cast Ferry as a Casanova of the haute couture (a musical equivalent of La Dolce Vita, if you will). After Siren, which scored a hit with "Love Is The Drug" (never liked it, btw), Roxy Music disbanded. Ferry amused himself in the interim by indulging what was a concurrent solo career, resuming Roxy with Manzanera and Mackay for 1979's slick Manifesto. The ethereal Avalon was the band's last studio album, though that work was echoed in subsequent Ferry solo albums like Boys And Girls and Bete Noire. Manzanera and Mackay have released albums together and apart, though none have approached Ferry in terms of commercial appeal.
