Rush
The greatest band to emerge from Canada (sorry, Loverboy fans). Rush joined the prog party a little late, and that by hopping its metal gate, but when most of the original guard had fallen they remained fighting on the front lines, growing stronger with every album. Their first few releases refined the riff-driven rock of Led Zeppelin even as their fantasy/sci-fi imagery grew more pronounced. By 2112, the band's miniature epics blossomed into a side-length opus that spoke for the blissed-out musical acolytes of a generation. A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres solidified the cult, while showing an ability to deliver their message in smaller, perfect parcels like "Closer to the Heart." When Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures were released, Rush had mobilized the young minds (and hearts) of millions. The albums that followed found Rush changing/evolving into a more clinical entity, with bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee sharing time on synthesizer and guitarist Alex Lifeson eschewing his old pyrotechnic magic for a cooler flame. During the '80s and '90s, Rush's music remained at a consistently high level; those waiting for the warriors to tire and drop their guard remain disappointed.
