Santana
The early albums are great mystical rites, invocations of dark spirits that belong to the jungle of mankind's subconscious. Then came the disco/funk diversions of the late '70s and '80s, and you could write Santana off as another dinosaur destined for oily repackages. Only something supernatural happened in 1999 and Santana enjoyed a renaissance, selling millions and millions of records again. Though Carlos Santana's articulate guitar playing is one of the band's most identifiable assets, it's hardly the only one. Talented musicians have always been a Santana hallmark, with Tom Coster, Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon and Michael Shrieve passing through its ranks over the years. While Santana is better filed under psychedelia or jazz fusion than progressive rock, we takes our medicine where we finds it and leave the labels to the little guys in the white coats behind the counter.
