Squeeze
Compared by some to The Beatles (now there's an albatross nobody wants), Squeeze at least collectively carried the mantle along with Elvis Costello, XTC and Split Enz. And at the end of the day, the songwriting team of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook may be placed on a pedestal of nearly equal height. The primary difference, of course, is that The Beatles were innovative and hugely influential, Squeeze not so much really. Originally pegged as part of the new wave of anti-pop players, then part of the short-lived pub rock category, the band never needed a label; the songs spoke for themselves. At any given moment, a Squeeze song is as likely to be running through my head as anything, which is as strong a testament as I can give to a band that clearly prides itself on catchy tunes.
