I always saw the Difford & Tilbrook experiment as Squeeze’s pop smarts minus the wit synonymous with that band’s work. And so you get something like “Picking Up The Pieces,” as sharp as a brand new suit and as empty as one too. Looking back at a song like “I Can’t Hold On” from Sweets, the verbal banter may have been taken to a distracting extreme, but I’ll take that any day over tepid observations like “I’m picking up the pieces / Maybe they’ll fit someday” or “Within these walls / I’m without you.” The latter comes from the nonalbum B side, a poor country relation to “Labelled With Love” that lacks its luster.
