F rank marked the righting of the H.M.S. Squeeze, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since. On certain days (let’s say Thursdays and Saturdays) I’m convinced this is the best of the post-East efforts, though on most days of the week (especially Sundays) I’m more likely to accord that honor to Play. I had the good fortune to see Squeeze during their tour to support this album (some fantastic show, that), just at the point when songs like “Third Rail” and “Some Fantastic Place” were capturing my imagination. (Not that my imagination ever plays hard to get where Squeeze is concerned.) Since they were playing on Halloween, I dressed up as a gentrified pirate to impress a girl I liked because, well, who doesn’t like pirates? (Mind you, this was years before Pirates of the Caribbean, so the answer at the time was most everyone. Especially the people I accidentally poked with my ceremonial sword.) So my affection for Some Fantastic Place may have to do with dodging a dueling death or the warm memories that my brother’s shared affection for Squeeze elicits (he bought me this disc). But I’m pretty sure it’s all about the music. There are the lump-in-the-throat ballads (“Jolly Comes Home,” “Some Fantastic Place”), the contagious craziness (“Everything In The World,” “Third Rail”) and those delicious inbetweenies (“It’s Over,” “Pinocchio”). Paul Carrack’s return earns a turn at the mike (“Loving You Tonight”) while Keith Wilkinson’s nearly ten-year tenure is commemorated with a rare cameo (“True Colours”). The rest of the record is Glenn Tilbrook setting ‘em up and knockin ‘em down. While Play may be the better album, when this disc is playing on my stereo, there’s no place I’d rather be.
