I f you’ve spent more than 10 minutes on this site, you’ll have noticed this “kronomyth” thing popping up from time to time. I was going to call this one Kronomyth 1.75: FICKLE ORPHAN, because 1) I was folding it into the Wilburys discography and plotting it between the first and second albums, 2) the selection seemed to accept any gift (the “fickle” part) from leftover live tracks (“Homeward Bound,” “Ain’t That Peculiar”) to slightly used soundtracks (“Wonderful Remark”) and 3) I thought it was fickan orphle. (The whole kronomyth idea is to boil the essence or myth of an album down to a few clever words and plot it accordingly in time like a planet in a solar system. Sometimes, of course, I just play with puns, like Elton John’s Ice on Fire, which I’ve condensed into “sticks=knocks” mostly because of the ice-on-fire album cover of Styx’ Equinox and only slightly because of the “sartorial elephance” insult I hurled soon after.) Anyway, having lined up a perfectly serviceable Kronomyth, Nobody’s Child did me the disservice of not sucking on subsequent listens. Granted, a good half of this comes from mixed parentage: performances from Saturday Night Live and David Letterman, soundtracks, miscellaneous live shows. And, perhaps fittingly, a few of them found homes on proper albums by the artists themselves (e.g., GnR’s awesome “Civil War”). But much of this was prepared for the task at hand, including new tracks from Traveling Wilburys, Ric Ocasek, Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, Eric Clapton and Elton John. As the Romanian Angel Appeal was orchestrated by the Fab Four’s better halves, Beatlologists (the whole manky lot of them) will already be acquainted with the following tidbits as well: “Nobody’s Child” was covered by The Beatles nearly 30 years earlier (for our mutual dignity, please do not send me an email detailing when they first played it, recorded it and released it and the differences in each version), George originally offered “That Kind of Woman” to Clapton for the Journeyman sessions and half of the Wilburys (Harrison, Lynne, Keltner) appear on Duane Eddy’s “The Trembler.” Relative to Live Aid, Nobody’s Child may have shined only a little light on the problems of post-Ceausescu Romania, but it’s still a good collection of songs for a good cause that may especially appeal to George Harrison fans as he’s involved in four of the fifteen.
