XTC
Contenders for "best pop band on the planet" during the '80s, which means visited by the same muse that rode with The Beatles, ELO, Cheap Trick, Squeeze, etc. XTC actually started as punks, sort of, but when keyboardist Barry Andrews left after Go 2 (he went to Shriekback in case you're interested), the band stopped making noisy music and started letting the quirky pop songwriting of Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding speak for itself. The band has released at least five brilliant albums (Drums And Wires, Black Sea, English Settlement, Skylarking, Oranges And Lemons) and tons of wonderful songs, any one of which could make an instant fan out of you. "Making Plans For Nigel" did it for me, and it's been ecstasy ever since.
